These are the five Year 12 Biology topics that A-level builds on from Day 1. Each one is a mark-scheme minefield. By Friday, your teen knows exactly how to navigate all of them.
Biological Molecules
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, ATP, water. The topic where mark-scheme language is most precise. “Phosphodiester bond” gets the mark. “The bond that holds the DNA strands together” does not. Day 1 sets the standard for every day that follows.
Cell Structure
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, microscopy, magnification calculations, cell fractionation. “Plasma membrane,” not “cell membrane.” Ultrastructure detail that catches most students out at A-level.
Transport Across Cell Membranes
Diffusion, osmosis, active transport, co-transport. Four mechanisms. Each with its own mark-scheme language. Most students lose marks not because they don’t understand the biology, but because they haven’t learned the specific words the examiner wants to read.
Cell Division
Mitosis, the cell cycle, cancer, stem cells. The phase-by-phase walkthrough most teachers rush. The structured sequential answer pattern that most students have never been shown.
Cell Recognition & The Immune System
Phagocytosis, T-cells, B-cells, antibodies, innate vs adaptive immunity. Often the topic that makes A-level Biology click. Also one of the highest-mark topics in the paper.
