Maths grade stuck at a B or C — even though they can do the work at home?

There is a specific difference between being able to do Maths and being able to perform in a Maths exam. Most students stuck at B have already crossed the knowledge threshold. The problem is something else.

Why Maths grades don't always reflect what your teen actually knows

Problem 1: Method selection under pressure

A-Level Maths papers test whether students can identify the correct method quickly, under time pressure, for a question they may not have seen before. Students who are strong at Maths often freeze on unfamiliar questions — not because they don't know the method, but because they haven't been trained to identify it under exam conditions. This is a trainable skill.

Problem 2: The method marks problem

In A-Level Maths, showing working clearly is worth marks independently of the final answer. Students who arrive at the correct answer through unclear working regularly lose method marks they didn't know they were losing. Writing mathematics in a way that communicates process to an examiner is a specific skill most students have never been explicitly taught.

Problem 3: The Pure / Statistics / Mechanics split

A-Level Maths covers three distinct areas. Most students have a hidden weakness in one — often Statistics or Mechanics — while performing adequately in Pure. Because overall grades blend all three, the specific weakness is masked until it appears in an exam. Identifying which component is dragging the grade is the first step to fixing it.
